Our impact goes beyond biochar

[ Land Quality ]
We have partnered with organic fertiliser companies that use our biochar in their products, thereby improving soil fertility and moisture retention, giving increased yields and climate-resilient farming typically at lower cost to farmers.
Reduction of synthetic fertilisers also reduces associated emissions from production.
[ Employment ]
Substrate creates skilled employment opportunities in marginalised/underinvested rural areas where our sites are located, including areas within the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET-P).
Our first operation employs 20 people in 2026, scaling to 60 in 2027. Our larger sites will employ 100+ people at each location, providing jobs in areas typically affected by reduced coal production.
We are piloting apprenticeship programmes for youth into our work environments.
[ Uses in Construction ]
We have partnered with an innovative cement company and a low-carbon asphalt company to deliver low carbon products to the construction and built environment sector - a sector which is responsible for c.20% of global emissions.
We directly enable reduction of emissions from this hard-to-abate sector by the addition of biochar which reduces embodied carbon in these applications.
[ Mine Rehabilitation ]
We are partnering with companies in the mining sector in Africa to develop biochar solutions to improve mine rehabilitation efforts in the region.
Mine closure leaves extremely low carbon tailings waste which can be prone to acid leaching. Our high carbon, alkaline biochar will be used to improve ecosystem rebuilding, resilience and biodiversity.
